What representations of young people can be found in E20?

The representation of young people that can be found in E20 is that Donnie the Black character of the show is represented to fall into Franz Fannon idea of Black people trying to put on a white mask in which he is doing to become a good guy. Furthermore Ava is the opposite of Franz Fannon idea as she is trying to become black due to her rough upbringing in society.

Why might producers and audiences be more interested in negative stereotypes of young people?

Producers may be interested in a negative stereotypes of young people as they can inject information into the audience feeding them with news that young people are dangerous youths who like to cause trouble but in E20 it shows that Dot Branning is trying to show them that they are welcome in society unlike Mrs Masood who is trying to get them kicked out of Walford.  

What other examples of representations of young people can you find from British television? Can you think of any positive or unexpected representations of young people?

There are many examples of representations of young people that I can find in British TV and most of the representations I gained from them are negative representations of young people for example in a BBC 3 program 'SOME GIRLS' is about four girls who are friends and two in which come a broken family and two in a stable family. Another show is 'MISFITS' shown on Channel 4, We can gain a positive and a negative representation from this show as they are teenagers who are in police custody who have superpowers and are trying to save the world by killing their counsellor.

Summary/opnion :

Basically the Leveson states that we need to make a difference between organisations that have a lot of power e.g Rupert Murdoch as he owns a media conglomerate in which they can do a lot of harm with information. Mainly most newspapers signed up to implement most of Lord Justice Leveson's non-statutory recommendations in which they sign 40 of leveson's first 47 recommendations as 7 of them resulted to a proposed role for OFCOM in auditing the work of the regulator.

But regulating press will make a big problem in free speech and threatening freedom of expression this links with the new and digital media of today's society allows people to speech about what is on there mind through blogs, social networking sites even though sites like twitter are regulated time to time, people don't necessary get away with freedom of speech.

London is situated with many businesses that give of the best representation of Britain but in August 2011 normally known as the ‘silly season’, London was attacked by many teenagers due to many topics stirred by the media of what teenagers actually want. Giving people ideas of teenagers started to spin making a negative representation of teenagers better than no representation as teenagers wanted to be heard.

The media is controlled by hegemony of politicians as newspapers are either right wing (conservative) or left wing (labour) leading to the reader/audiences feeling that they MUST believe what the media say as it is the ‘common sense’. This is shown by the front page news allowing the reader to believe in the preferred reading (Hall’s) which is not taking teenagers seriously over the issues they want to discuss leading them to riot.

The images shown of the teenagers are shown either holding a weapon, which constructs and makes black people fall in to Alvarado’s theory of black representation, as Alvarado believed that black fall under four categories of dangerous, exotic, humorous and pitied; this leads into the London riots as they are dangerous because they are rioting, exotic because they are black, humorous because some of them don’t know why they are rioting and pitied by the audience intercepting the media.

Positive representation of other teenagers especially whites challenges Edward Saeed’s theory portraying white to be the other as they are counting to do the right thing, this is shown in the times newspaper to make the white youths look like they are the dominate ones and the helpful ones as the media in the UK is made up of representation of white upper class educated people.

Conflict between the police and urban youth had increased throughout the riots in London as police in Tottenham who are blacks are wearing white masks as they turned white as they have forgot about culture and where they have come from linking to Franz Fanon theory of wearing white masks.

                          

I believe in that a negative representation gives a person, meaning to be heard as action can be critical. Throughout the riots in London if the teenagers had no representation they would have mean allowed to riot and not stop by the police. Overall the teenagers in the media especially in newspapers were represented to be negative as they were shown to be the main cause of the riots.

Summary:

The articles discuss that the politician had taken part in rape and abuse of young boys from the homes as a part of paedophile ring. Steven Messam was one of hundred children, BBC news night only uncovered fraction of the abuse. The criticism was reveal by Iain Overton through twitter “a very senior political figure who is a paedophile” that had created speculations. News night did not name the politician. Messam had reported the abuse to the police but was called a liar. The investigation had be led from the BBC was accused of covering a previous Newsnight investigation that Jimmy Saville abused children.

Opinion:

I believe that George Entwistle was used as a scapegoat as he said that is was wrong to air the Newsnight program and he was only aware after programme was shown on TV but he had apologised to Lord Alpine and my perspective of this is that Entwistle should be allowed to work for BBC but be demoted to another section of BBC.

I accept as the public, I think that Newsnight should remain open due to the information that is available through the newsnight but BBC should put down or fire or even change the journalist on the show.

Twitter users should not be charged as they are required to their freedom of speech but I think some people such as Iain Overton had used their freedom of speech to create a stir in society between politicians and people like Sally Bercow as they had been all speculating on Twitter.

BBC: CHILDREN IN NEED

Children in Need goes ahead in shadow of BBC scandals-

Summary:

The BBC will try to address the fallout of Jimmy Saville in the CHILDREN IN NEED fundraiser on BBC and will not mention his name. The BBC will keep an close eye on the public and how they respond. Terry Wogan will present the show. The recent problems of the BBC will shadow the the six hour fundraiser. They will make reference to the recent events that happen and shown in the press. The BBC also faced a downfall in the trust of license fee payers due to the result of Jimmy Saville.
Opinion:
My opinion about Jimmy Saville being the elephant in the room of this years children in need is that the BBC should really give any notice to him as he abuse those girls and don't think that public will take the reference positively due to the fact that we are license payers.
